INTRODUCTION:

The Medical Laboratory Technician performs clinical laboratory testing and phlebotomy services to support patient diagnosis and treatment in a Tribal health clinic. Responsibilities include specimen collection, processing, quality control, regulatory compliance, equipment maintenance, and management of laboratory inventory, supplies, and ordering. The role supports accurate and timely reporting while maintaining a safe and patient-centered environment.

 

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Phlebotomy and Specimen Collection

  • Perform venipuncture and capillary blood collection on patients of all ages.
  • Verify patient identity and ensure proper labeling of all specimens.
  • Prepare specimens for transport, processing, and analysis.
  • Follow infection control practices and maintain a clean, safe phlebotomy area.
  • Provide excellent patient service, ensuring comfort and safety during specimen collection.
  • Document collection activities in the Electronic Health Record (EHR).

Clinical Laboratory Testing

  • Perform routine and moderate-complexity laboratory tests in chemistry, hematology, urinalysis, immunology, and microbiology.
  • Operate and maintain laboratory instruments and ensure proper functioning prior to testing.
  • Process, prepare, and analyze specimens following laboratory procedures.
  • Enter and verify laboratory results in the EHR with accuracy and confidentiality.

Quality and Compliance

  • Follow CLIA, OSHA, HIPAA, AAAHC and Tribal health regulatory requirements.
  • Perform daily quality control checks, proficiency testing, and instrument calibrations.
  • Maintain accurate logs, worksheets, and documentation required for accreditation compliance.
  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives to ensure accuracy and reliability of results.

Equipment and Supply Management

  • Monitor inventory of reagents, test kits, supplies, and phlebotomy materials.
  • Order laboratory and phlebotomy supplies and coordinate vendor deliveries.
  • Maintain equipment logs, perform routine maintenance, and document service activities.
  • Identify equipment malfunctions and coordinate repairs or replacements.

Operational Support

  • Communicate critical lab values and abnormal results according to clinic protocols.
  • Collaborate with providers, nursing staff, and administrative teams to support patient care needs.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe laboratory and phlebotomy environment.
  • Assist in training new staff on lab procedures and safety protocols, as needed.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS REQUIRED FOR POSITION:

  • Knowledge of laboratory testing procedures, phlebotomy techniques, and safety protocols.
  • Ability to collect specimens safely and accurately from diverse patient populations.
  • Ability to operate and troubleshoot laboratory instruments.
  • Strong organizational skills for managing inventory and equipment.
  • Effective communication and teamwork skills.
  • Cultural sensitivity and ability to work effectively with Tribal communities and diverse patients.

Working Conditions

  • Exposure to bloodborne pathogens, biohazards, and chemicals.
  • Standing for extended periods and occasional lifting of 25–40 lbs.
  • Frequent interaction with patients requiring phlebotomy services.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Associate degree in Medical Laboratory Technology or related field.

 

Certification

MLT (ASCP),  AMT preferred. Achieve certification within 6 months of employment required.

Phlebotomy certification preferred (CPT-I/CPT-II, PBT(ASCP), or equivalent).

 

Experience

Previous clinical laboratory experience preferred.

Phlebotomy experience in outpatient or clinical settings preferred.

Experience in Tribal or community health clinics is beneficial.

 

In accordance with the requirements of the Health Center Manual, employee of this position, as a condition of employment, must document immunity to Rubella & Measles. Influenza vaccine is recommended for all health workers in contact with patients.

The employee must be suitable for Tribal employment in your position as determined by fingerprint check results and appropriate background investigation. An incumbent found not suitable after hire will be removed from this position.

The employee is required to operate a tribal-owned or leased motor vehicle, commercial motor vehicle, rental motor vehicle or privately owned motor vehicle in the performance of official duties. An appropriate, valid driver’s license is required for the position.
