Domestic Violence:

Domestic Violence is defined as the mistreatment of an intimate partner by using physical, sexual, and emotional abuse including threats, harassment, neglect, and stalking to establish control and maintain power and control over another person.

  • There are some obvious signs that your partner is abusive. For example, they are physically violent or make clear threats to harm you. However, some signs of abuse are harder to detect. If you are concerned that your partners’ behavior is unhealthy or abusive, this short quiz may help you detect signs of abuse more clearly:
    • Does your partner complain and make it difficult for you to visit/see friends or family members?
    • Does your partner accuse you of things that aren’t true?
    • Has your partner ever taken money from you or withheld money from you?
    • Does your partner have a say in everything you do?
    • Does your partner gaslight you, make you doubt yourself?
    • Do you feel your partner pressures you into sexual activity that you do not want or feel uncomfortable about?
    • Are you frightened of your partner when they are under the influence of drugs or alcohol?
    • Does your partner destroy your property or threaten to kill your pets?
    • Has your partner ever told you you’re a bad parent or threatened to take your kids from you?
    • Does your partner control what you do, who you see, or where you go?
    • Does your partner embarrass you in public on purpose? Call you bad names, whether in private or in front of others?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, you may be in an unhealthy/abusive relationship. Please reach out to our Family Violence Program for further support or help. For emergencies – call 911.
