RATE OF PAY: $24.96 – $31.19 / PER HOUR

INTRODUCTION:
The Spokane Tribe Wildlife Program’s “Upland Habitat Management” project was developed as partial mitigation for the impacts from the construction and ongoing operation of Grand Coulee Dam and the Federal Columbia River Power System. The Habitat Biologist I/II is responsible for leading and implementing various ecological and habitat restoration projects across the Spokane Indian Reservation, including planting trees, shrubs, grasses, and forbs, assisting with noxious weed management activities, and leading the collection and analysis of project related data.

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Lead and implement habitat restoration projects including planting trees, shrubs, forbs, and grasses.
• Maintain project timelines and track project success.
• Assist with planning and implementing noxious weed treatments.
• Keep supervisors informed of project progress, successes, and needs, and provide management
• recommendations as needed.
• Utilize data and project results to inform decision making processes and track projects from
• conception to completion.
• Provide guidance and training to technical staff on safety procedures, restoration techniques (planting), plant identification, vegetation and habitat monitoring, and data collection.
• Perform or delegate scheduled maintenance on all equipment, including tractors, ATV’s and UTV’s, trucks, and power tools. Maintain records of maintenance tasks, repairs, and recommended maintenance schedules.
• Document and maintain records of all ecological restoration and habitat improvement projects, and any other data collection efforts.
• Conduct data analyses and utilize other scientific research to help inform decision making, track success, develop reports, and help produce best management practices for project implementation.
• Provide training and/or assistance to program technicians for habitat management purposes
• Collect and update GIS data
• Participate in DNR Interdisciplinary teams (IDT) providing professional insight and/or concerns for projects on the reservation.
• Administrative and other duties as assigned

Additional duties for Wildlife Biologist II
• Assist with budget management, purchasing, and other administrative tasks
• Prepare reports for funding agencies
• Lead development of study designs for data collection and tracking project success
• Oversee technical staff in day to day duties
• Find and submit proposals for grant and funding

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES REQUIRED:
• Knowledge of plant and animal communities, and working knowledge of plant and weed identification
• Must possess a basic first aid/CPR card or able to obtain one within 60 days of hire.
• Must be able to work independently, in rugged terrain, in remote areas.
• Ability and knowledge to work safely and efficiently around agricultural and spraying equipment, ATV’s and chainsaws.
• Experience in the use and application of standard computer programs and associated software.
• Ability to communicate effectively with verbal and written instructions and work with co-workers, tribal programs, general public, and other agencies.
• Must be able to operate GPS and mapping tools
• Must be able to work with diverse cultural, professional, and technical interdisciplinary teams.
• Must be able to safely operate ATV and 4-wheel drive vehicles.
• Must be in excellent physical condition and be able to work in inclement weather conditions and rough terrain, to include carrying 30+ pounds routinely.
• Additional Skill and Abilities for Wildlife Biologist II
• Working knowledge of data analysis software and packages, and of ESRI software products in relation to natural resource projects
• Broad knowledge of plant and animal identification
• Previous experience with budget development and management, grant writing, and
• project management

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
• Valid Washington State Driver’s License, reliable transportation, and be tribally insurable.
Wildlife Biologist I
• Bachelor’s degree in a natural resources related field AND 1 year experience related to habitat restoration, invasive species control, or other natural resource management
Wildlife Biologist II
• Bachelor’s degree in a natural resource related field AND 4 years of experience; · OR Master’s degree in a natural resources related field AND 1 year experience related to habitat restoration,            invasive species control, or other natural resource management

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
• CDL
• Wildland Fire
• Current Pesticide Applicators License from Washington State Department of Agriculture (WSDA) or from another state, or ability to obtain.
