TITLE: WILDLIFE BIOLOGIST I/II (WEEDS)

RATE OF PAY: $24.96 – $31.19 / PER HOUR

INTRODUCTION:
The Spokane Tribe Wildlife Program’s “Upland Habitat Management” project was developed as partial mitigation for the impacts from the construction and ongoing operation of Grand Coulee Dam and the Federal Columbia River Power System. The Weed Biologist I is responsible for developing and implementing all weed management activities on the Spokane Indian Reservation, and providing noxious weed management recommendations to other departments as needed.

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Assist with the implementation of the Integrated Weed Management Plan (IWMP) and all associated projects.
• Develop and implement noxious weed control activities for cover crop fields, other planted areas, and non-planted areas on mitigation parcels and tribal trust lands.
• Maintain records of chemical, biological, and mechanical control applications
• Collect and input field data and spatial data, and conduct relevant analyses to inform project decisions.
• Assist with equipment maintenance: tractors, chainsaws, ATV, side by side, tractor im-plements, vehicles & etc.
• Train technical staff on chemical weed control and related worker protection standards
• Communicate project progress and needs to supervisors
• Participate with the Integrated Resource Management Plan (IRMP) Interdisciplinary Team (IDT) to review project proposals on the reservation.
• Other duties as assigned

Additional duties for Wildlife Biologist II
• Assist with budget management, purchasing, and other administrative tasks
• Prepare reports for funding agencies
• Lead development of study designs for data collection and tracking project success
• Oversee technical staff in day to day duties
• Find and submit proposals for grant and funding opportunities

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES REQUIRED:
• Knowledge of plant and animal communities, and working knowledge of plant and weed identification
• Must possess a basic first aid/CPR card or able to obtain one within 60 days of hire.
• Must be able to work independently, in rugged terrain, in remote areas.
• Ability and knowledge to work safely and efficiently around agricultural and spraying equipment, ATV’s and chainsaws.
• Experience in the use and application of standard computer programs and associated software.
• Ability to communicate effectively with verbal and written instructions and work with co-workers, tribal programs, general public, and other agencies.
• Must be able to operate GPS and mapping tools
• Must be able to work with diverse cultural, professional, and technical interdisciplinary teams.
• Must be able to safely operate ATV and 4-wheel drive vehicles.
• Must be in excellent physical condition and be able to work in inclement weather condi-tions and rough terrain, to include carrying 30+ pounds routinely.

Additional Skill and Abilities for Wildlife Biologist II
• Working knowledge of data analysis software and packages, and of ESRI software products in relation to natural resource projects
• Broad knowledge of plant and animal identification
• Previous experience with budget development and management, grant writing, and pro-ject management

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
• Valid Washington State Driver’s License, reliable transportation, and be tribally insura-ble.
• Must be able to obtain Pesticide Applicators License from Washington State Depart-ment of Agriculture (WSDA) within 90 days of hire
BIO I
• Bachelor’s degree in a natural resources related field AND 1 year experience related to habitat restoration, invasive species control, or other natural resource management
BIO II
• Bachelor’s degree in a natural resource related field AND 4 years of experience;
• OR Master’s degree in a natural resources related field AND 1 year experience related to habitat restoration, invasive species control, or other natural resource management

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
• CDL
• Wildland Fire
• Current Pesticide Applicators License from Washington State Department of Agriculture (WSDA) or from another state.
• Experience beyond the minimum qualifications related to invasive species control or other natural resource management

CERTIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
• Must have or be able to obtain a Washington State Department of Agriculture (WSDA) Pesticide Private Applicators License within 90 days of hire.
