INTRODUCTION:

This position is located on the Spokane Indian Reservation at the Fire Management office in Wellpinit, Washington. The incumbent works as a lookout in reporting smoke columns from Lookout Towers on the Spokane Reservation.  Incumbent will be working by himself/herself in the tower with radio communication to the Fire Management Dispatch office.  The incumbent will be responsible for his or her own transportation to and from the work site.  Some basic wildland fire training and/or experience is preferred but not required for this position.

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBLITIES:

  • Visually inspects the Spokane Reservation for unusual activity, especially smoke and weather fronts on a continual basis throughout the day.
  • Report’s location of smoke with the help of a fire finder.
  • Map’s location of smoke and fire location by azimuth reading and known landmarks.
  • Reports weather readings to Fire dispatch
  • Monitors and reports significant changes in color, volume, or spread of smoke on known fires.
  • Reports lightning strikes and thunderstorms.
  • Reports wind conditions and occurrence of fire spotting

 KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES REQUIRED:

  • Ability to perform duties under stressful and adverse weather conditions, such as high winds and thunderstorms.
  • Ability to remain calm under urgent and frequently changing conditions.
  • Must be able to perform duties while working in a tower 100 feet in height.
  • Must have knowledge of two-way radio operation.
  • Must be able to effectively work alone and unsupervised

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • Previous experience operating two-way radio
  • Must have personal transportation to and from the worksite. Worksites are the Tower Mountain Lookout located near the west end of the Reservation and the Wellpinit Mountain Lookout located near the town of Wellpinit, WA
  • Must be able to walk up and down fire tower lookout stairs several times each day. A light walk test 1 mile in 16 min with no weight every year

PREFERRED REQUISITES:

  • Wildland fire training and/or experience preferred
