RATE OF PAY: $19.81 – $29.72 / PER HOUR

REASON FOR HIRE:

The goal of the Tribal Language/Culture program is to revitalize the language, culture and history of the Spokane Tribe. Our main goal is to ensure that the language and culture are being passed down from generation to generation. The Language Specialist will teach our Spokane language using the Cultural ways and assist the efforts to revitalize the Spokane Language and Culture.

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Required to train other departments in the language, culture and curriculum development when directed;
  • Teach from Preschool to 8th Grade at the Back to the Heart Immersion school;
  • Use stories, songs and traditional games to teach the language.
  • Teach children in outdoor settings, implement cultural field trips;
  • Teach culture in Back to the Heart Immersion School, (after Training);
  • Assist in culturally based curriculum development;
  • Continually obtain education/training in cultural relevant classroom management, culturally relevant teaching methods, and effective teaching strategies for teaching Native American Students;
  • Collaborate with community partners to establish culturally relevant programs and events with the intent of building and fostering cultural communities;
  • Assist with community engagement activities (i.e., Powwow, Community Wellness, Summer Program, Health Fairs, etc.) to establish a community presence and serve as a cultural liaison between The Immersion School and our community;
  • Use culturally relevant classroom management skills;
  • Take children outdoors and promote exploration, problem solving, cooperation, socialization, and choice time through traditional guided learning;
  • Establish short term and long-term goals that promote individual and group educational plans which embrace culture;
  • Prepare classroom materials to support developmentally and culturally appropriate curriculum/lesson plans; create and change appropriate learning stations;
  • Communicate regularly with parents regarding each child’s progress.
  • Set up class times for parents/guardians to learn the language/culture in order for them to communicate with their children;
  • Document all significant classroom issues, create parent contact information;
  • Attend meetings, trainings, and on the job development activities;
  • Record and maintain monthly assessment videos on students Spokane language reception, expression and retention; monitor and encourage conversational interaction between student-teacher(s) and student-student;
  • Supervise and monitor children at all times;
  • Monitor and report child abuse;
  • Other duties as requested or assigned.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS REQUIRED FOR POSITION:

  • Ability to model the Tribal values in every aspect of your job duties;
  • Fluent in the Spokane Language through the completion of N1, S1, N2, S2 while working towards the completion of N3 when available;
  • Must learn the language and culture of the Spokane Tribe;
  • Must have communication skills and the ability to teach the Spokane Language in oral and written form;
  • Must be flexible and able to use several language teaching methods;
  • Must have excellent interpersonal skills, will work respectfully with Elders and other culturally knowledgeable people and students

SPECIAL CERTIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

  • Required to apply for and receive a Tribal and First People’s Language, Culture and Oral Traditions Certification or endorsement
  • Infant, Child, and Adult CPR/First Aid/AED certification
  • Must complete a course in Issues in Child Abuse and Neglect/Mandated Reporting Training
  • Food Handlers certification

 

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • High School Diploma; and/or working toward a Child Development Associates (CDA) and/or working towards an AA in Early Childhood Education or Education;
  • Must be culturally knowledgeable in the Spokane Indian Cultural ways.
  • Must have a valid WA State Driver’s License, good driving record and be able to hold Tribal insurance.
  • Must be able to pass required state, federal and tribal background checks.

 

OTHER:

Must be able to interpret language teachings through spoken Salish, spelling and written forms using the Salish font (APS alphabet). Accept training and implement indigenous classroom management and indigenous teaching methodology.  Able to work respectfully with Tribal Elders.  Able to work well independently and be a team player.
