PURPOSE:

The goal of the Tribal Language/Culture program is to preserve the language, culture and history of the Spokane Tribe. Our main goal is to ensure that the language is being passed down from generation to generation. The Cook will shop for supplies and prepare meals for the students at the Back to the Heart School/

MAJOR JOB DUTIES:

  • Learn the language of the different foods and language around cooking and serving foods, etc.
  • To prepare meals and snacks for students, including building a relationship by eating with the students
  • Assist when needed in preparing the menu;
  • Help keep the necessary paperwork in order;
  • Must comply with the menu and its requirements for healthy meals and proportion sizes;
  • Cleaning and sanitizing meal preparation area and meal service areas;
  • Maintaining an inventory and preparing food orders;
  • Shopping for food and necessary supplies
  • When necessary, ensure safety and wellbeing of youth, serve as a role-model, documentation and reporting of incidents and or accidents;
  • Transport food in a safe and sanitary manner following all regulations for food temperature;
  • Prepare foods for school field trips as needed
  • Expected to exercise mature judgment, initiative and resourcefulness in carrying out the responsibilities and duties of this position and will report to designated workstation at scheduled work hours;
  • Works collaboratively with all Language Staff;
  • Performs other activities and duties as required at the Back to the Heart School.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Ability to take direction and work with minimal supervision;
  • Ability to work cooperatively with members of the public and with co-workers;
  • Ability to multi-task
  • Acquire required training such as Mandatory reporting, CPR/1st Aid, Food Handlers, HIV/AIDS, Blood Bourne Pathogens and others as determined necessary.
  • Must have good communication skills with both students and adults

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent;
  • Valid State Driver’s license, good driving record, Tribally Insurable
  • Must be 18 years or older
  • Must have or obtain food handlers card upon hire
  • Must be able to meet the physical demands of the position, which may include; standing for long periods of time, lifting up to 50 lbs, and participating in outdoor activities
  • Must work professionally and effectively with students, staff, elders, and the community.
