RATE OF PAY: $18.00 / PER HOUR

INTRODUCTION:

The technician will have hands-on experience in water quality and fisheries management, with an emphasis on limnological and fish health surveys on Lake Roosevelt. It is anticipated that Techs will work with limnology June – November and with Fisheries December – May.

 MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Work within the Spokane Tribal Fisheries Department assisting with limnological and fisheries survey efforts on Lake Roosevelt. Techs will assist biologists with extensive field work (typically 10 hrs/day, 4 days/week, in possibly inclement weather conditions), data collection, maintenance of survey gear and boats, and data entry. Techs will be required to complete boater safety training and will be extensively trained in various fields and laboratory safety protocols. Techs will be provided with personal protective equipment including footwear and life jackets. Techs will be expected to maintain a weekly log of their activities and accomplishments. Techs will learn how and why limnological and fisheries data are collected to inform management actions which preserve and enhance Lake Roosevelt fisheries. Techs will be responsible for other duties as assigned.

 KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES REQUIRED FOR POSITION:

  • Willing and able to function as an entry-level fisheries technician
  • Punctual, safety oriented, and willing to work long days in field and office settings
  • Reliable transportation to/from Fisheries offices in Wellpinit or Airway Heights.
  • Demonstrate interest in a career field such as; fisheries, wildlife, culture, forestry, aquaculture, etc. (expressed in cover letter and during interview)
  • Able to work in a professional setting with co-workers, and general public
  • Able to work in individual and large group settings
  • Able to understand and follow safety protocols
  • Willing to work in inclement weather (heat, wind, rain, exposure)
  • Willing to work flexible and long hours in office and field when necessary
  • Willing and able to work effectively in supervised and non-supervised settings
  • Willing to travel which will include overnight stays in hotels (travel, lodging and meal costs will be covered by the STF Department)
  • Willing to learn about regional Tribal and Federal programs and processes
  • Willing to spend long hours in training/research/reading settings
  • Able to utilize PC computers and software
  • Able (or willing to learn how) to enter data into MS Excel and utilize data collection applications
  • Willing to work long hours on a boat in a large, deep reservoir, and in remote areas
  • Able to handle extended periods of sun exposure and limited access to restroom facilities
  • Able to pack and carry 30lbs over various terrain

 MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Valid Washington State Driver’s License, good driving record
  • Demonstrate interest in a career field such as; fisheries, wildlife, culture, forestry, aquaculture, etc. (expressed in cover letter and during interview)
  • Must be physically able to perform the job duties described above
  • Must have experience and ability to use computers and software for data collection and entry
  • Must successfully pass all pre-employment screenings including drug test and criminal background check
