INTRODUCTION:
The Fish and Habitat Biologist position is a full-time, permanent position located in Wellpinit, Washington and is responsible for collecting water quality, water quantity, fish and habitat data and aiding in the management of the Spokane Indian Reservation’s inland lakes and streams. Specific objectives are listed below.
MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Aid in the development and implementation of the Spokane Tribe’s Inland Lakes Management Plan, Spokane Tribal Streams Management Plan and the Spokane Tribe’s Beaver Restoration Strategy.
• Lead fish, habitat, water quality and water quantity data collection on all inland lakes and streams within the Spokane Tribe’s reservation boundaries.
• Provide stream and lake habitat management recommendations to the Water and Fish Program Manager and Project Manager.
• Analyze data, provide annual reports to the funding agency and willingness to provide oral presentations.
• Responsible for maintaining equipment and tools including skid steers, excavators, ATV’s, side by sides, chainsaws, vehicles, and building maintenance.
• Provide training and/or assistance to program technicians for fish, habitat, water quality and water quantity data collection techniques.
• Collect and update GIS data
• Participate with the Integrated Resource Management Plan (IRMP) Interdisciplinary Team (IDT) to review tribal project proposals on the reservation
• Administrative and other duties as assigned
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES REQUIRED:
• Ability and knowledge to work safely and efficiently around 4-wheel drive trucks, ATV’s, side by sides, chainsaws, various power tools, and heavy equipment
• Ability to communicate effectively using verbal, non-verbal, and written communication with diverse groups of stakeholders
• Must have knowledge and experience in fish and aquatic habitat restoration, planning, and implementation
• Knowledgeable of the identification and life cycle characteristics of riparian plants and fish on the Spokane Reservation
• Ability to manage GIS databases, conduct spatial analyses, and produce maps
• Ability to work independently or collaboratively to meet deadlines
• The incumbent is expected to be punctual, self-motivated, and exercise sound judgement (safety-oriented) in carrying out the responsibilities of this position
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
• A Bachelor’s Degree in Fisheries, Ecology, Biology, Natural Resource Science, Environmental Science, or closely related field AND 12 months of professional experience related to fisheries management or habitat restoration, or closely related field
• Must possess a valid driver’s license and be tribally insurable
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office
• Proficient in Arc GIS
• Proficient in using GPS tools for creating and reading maps
• Must be willing to work extended hours, nights and weekends as needed. Regular schedule is Monday – Thursday 0630 – 1700hrs; subject to change if necessary

• CDL
• Wildland Fire
• SCUBA Certification
