On April 21, 2006 the Northwest Governors and Columbia River Tribes gathered in Spokane, Washington. Prior to the historical meeting, Spokane Tribal Business Council Chairman, Greg Abrahamson joined the other 13 Tribal Chairmen for lunch with Governor Christine Gregoire, Montana Governor Brian Schweitzer and Idaho's Lieutenant Governor Jim Risch.

The gathering was coordinated by Governor Gregoire's office so that the Governors could hear concerns and issues Tribe's face each day along the Columbia River. Following the luncheon with the Tribal Chairmen, everyone joined together for the afternoon meeting which was opened to all Tribal Representatives and the Governors.

Tribal Leaders also reminded the Governors of the cultural and sacred sites that are being washed away or looted along the riverbanks. A common theme heard throughout the day came from Tribal Leaders; protect and revitalize our precious salmon. A Tribal representative said all Tribes along the Columbia River have lost a natural resource that our ancestors relied upon, salmon. He continued by saying, "Bring the salmon home for our health and our spiritual ways."

Governor Gregoire said, "Guided by science, this group will develop a plan that will work effectively for everyone." Montana Governor Brian Schweitzer wrapped up the meeting by saying this is the beginning of the journey for us, we want to work together with respect to the Tribe's culture and heritage.

Following the historical meeting, Governor Gregoire's office invited Spokane Tribal Business Council Chairman Greg Abrahamson to join the Governors news conference. The Governors and Chairman Abrahamson shared with the media the success of the days dialog and progress.
