INTRODUCTION:

Mental Health Counselor assists the Mental Health Program Manager in providing community based supportive services to those who are chronically ill and are receiving services from Behavioral Health.

 

 MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Complete mental health assessment and develop treatment plan for each client.
  2. Provide individual and group therapy/counseling based on need.
  3. Implement Parent Classes/home education
  4. Maintain case files and document case notes daily.
  5. Administer and score MMPI and other testing instruments that are approved by Program Manager.
  6. Respond to suicide and other life threatening situations.
  7. Be on call and assist law enforcement when needed.

KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED FOR THE POSITION:

  1. Knowledge of mental health diagnosis and behavior.
  2. Ability to work with mental health clients who are in crisis.
  3. Must be able to define problems, collect date, establish facts and draw valid conclusion.
  4. Ability to communicate with non-judgmental language and unconditional positive regard.  Must be a team player.

SUPERVISORY CONTROL

Is supervised by the Mental Health Program Manager.  Will meet for case staffing as needed.

 

COMPLEXITY

This position is complex in nature as it involves working with people who have mental health issues that at times may be displayed through erratic behaviors.

 

GUIDELINES

Will practice within the ethical standards of and under the laws as they relate to theWashington Administrative Codes for Washington State, Mental Health.

 

SCOPE AND EFFECT

Scope of work is to normalize the effects of the chronic mentally ill by monitoring the intake compliance and effects of mental health medications, facilitate a basis to evaluate daily living skill functioning, promote and facilitate any outside services for the client that would increase long-term stabilization and incorporate the treatment/recovery concepts of chemical dependency concepts in all levels of interaction when client is co-morbid.

 

PERSONAL CONTACTS

Will be in contact with clients, family members, other mental health counselors, drug and alcohol counselors, psychiatrist and I. H. S. doctors.

 

PURPOSE OF CONTACTS

The purpose of the contacts is to provide mental health services to clients who are  reporting or experiencing abnormal behaviors, in crisis or needing to be assessed for mental illness.  Also contact is to provide stabilization for those who are mentally ill.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Physical demands include setting for several hours while counseling, facilitating a group or completing an assessment/evaluation.  May be required to drive a tribal vehicle at times. 

 

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  1. Licensed Mental Health Professional in State of Washington.
  2. Must have a valid Washington State Drivers License to drive a Tribal Vehicle.
  3. Must pass a criminal background investigation.
  4. Computer skills including Work competence.
