INTRODUCTION:

The Personal Care Program will coordinate medical services with the Indian Health Services (HIS) Community Health Representative (CHR) and the Tribe’s Department of Social Services (DSS).  The Personal Care Program will provide eligible individuals residing on the Spokane Tribe of Indian’s Reservation, located in Steven’s County, with services in daily living activities care and medical supervision/assistance. They will also provide referral information for other licensed Home Health Care facilities in the serviceable area.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Incumbent will provide basic and advanced personal care services to eligible elderly and developmentally delayed individuals residing on the Spokane Reservation in the areas of:

  • Assistance with care of the basic personal hygiene and grooming needs, i.e. hair, teeth, dentures, shaving, and trimming nails (excluding clients who are diabetic or have poor circulation).  Supervising client when performing the tasks of caring for their own appearance.
  • Supervise and guide the client while dressing and undressing, assist with difficult tasks, such as tying shoes and buttoning.  May be required to completely undress or dress client when they are unable to do so themselves.
  • Supervise or assist client when bathing and other difficult tasks, such as getting in or out of the tub, washing their back, and may also require totally bathing the client if they are unable to was themselves.  If the tub is not a feasible alternative, bed baths may be required.
  • Includes supervising or assistance with other difficult tasks, such as cutting food, buttering bread, and feeding the consumer when they are unable to feed themselves.
  • Supervising the consumer when able to care for own toileting needs, helping consumer to and from the bathroom, lifting client on and off the toilet, assist with bedpan routines and diapering.  May need to perform routine peri/colostomy/catheter task for consumer when they are able to supervise the activity.
  • Supervise the consumer when walking alone or with the help of a mechanical device, such as a walker.  Assist with difficult parts of walking, such as climbing stairs.  Supervise the consumer if they are able to propel a wheelchair or pushing a wheelchair if they are unable to do it themselves.  Provide constant physical assistance to the consumer if totally unable to walk alone or with mechanical device.
  • Assist client when getting in and out of bed or wheelchair, on and off the toilet, in and out of the bathtub.  Includes supervising the client when able to transfer if guided, provide steadying, and help the client when assists in own transfer.  Lifting the client, when they are unable to assist in his/her own transfer, requires specialized training.
  • Positioning means assisting the consumer to assume a desired position.  Positioning includes turning and positioning to prevent secondary disabilities, such as contractures and balance deficits.
  • Assist client to self-administer medications prescribed by attending physician.  Includes reminding them, handing them the medication container, and opening the container.
  • Assist the client with exercise and skin care; including application of ointments or lotions and changing dry bandages or dressings if professional judgment is not required or sterile procedures are required.  Body care excludes foot care for consumers who are diabetic or have poor circulation.
  • Travel to Medical Services.  A client may need to be accompanied or transported to a physician’s office or clinic in the local area to obtain medical treatment or diagnosis.
  • Assist with shopping to meet the consumer’s health care or nutritional needs.  Assist when the consumer can do their own shopping or shopping for them if they are unable to.

REQUIREMENTS AND QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Complete the Fundamentals of Care Giving Class (28 hour course) sponsored by ALTCEW.
  • 10 hours of continuing education each year as a refresher course is mandatory.
  • Ability to work in a demanding environment.
  • Valid Washington State Drivers License and proof of Insurance.
  • Complete First Aid/CPR, HIV, Senior Safety, and Food Handlers training.
