SUMMARY:

Provide civil legal representation to victims of domestic violence that are referred by the Spokane Tribe Family Violence Program. This is a three year grant, offering part-time.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Provide legal representation to domestic violence victims with all civil matters including protection order, dissolution, and custody hearings in the Spokane Tribal Court and Washington State Court.

KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THIS POSITION:

  • Knowledge of the dynamics and theories of domestic violence and conflict resolution.
  • Knowledge of federal Indian law preferred.
  • Substantial tribal court experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of federal, state and Tribal protocol for battered women and their children.
  • Knowledge of the dynamics and theories of domestic violence and conflict resolution

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: QUALIFICATIONS

  • Active membership in Washington state bar association, in good standing with no pending or unresolved disciplinary matters.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision, be well organized, and able to handle multiple projects in a timely manner.
  • Must NOT have any founded domestic violence, sexual assault or child abuse charges.
  • Knowledge of the dynamics and theories of domestic violence and conflict resolution.
  • Must have the ability to understand, learn about, and appreciate the difference working within Native American culture.
  • Must be able to pass a background check.
  • Must be willing to attend training and willing to travel.
  • Must have a valid Washington State Driver's license and be Tribally insurable. 

OTHER: 

  • 3 years experience preferred as a licensed attorney.
  • Knowledge of federal Indian law preferred.
  • Substantial tribal court experience preferred.

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS:

  • The civil victim attorney will work under the supervision of the Office of the Spokane Tribal Attorney.
