The Spokane Tribe of Indians Head Start Program is designed to promote the school readiness of low-income children by enhancing their cognitive, social, and emotional development—
in a learning environment that supports children’s growth in language, literacy, mathematics, science, social and emotional functioning, creative arts, physical skills, and approaches to learning; and
through the provision to low-income children and their families of health, educational, nutritional, social, and other services that are determined, based on family needs assessments, to be necessary.
- Provide responsive care, effective teaching, and an organized learning environment that promotes health development and children’s skill growth aligned with the Head Start
- Emphasize nurturing and responsive practices, interactions, and environments that foster trust and emotional security; are communication and language rich; promote critical thinking and problem-solving; social, emotional, behavioral, and language development; provide supportive feedback for learning; motivate continued effort; and support all children’s engagement in learning experiences and activities;
- Focus on promoting growth in the developmental progressions described in the Head Start Early Learning Outcomes Framework by aligning with and using the Framework and curricula to direct planning of organized activities, lesson plans, and the implementation of high-quality early learning experiences that are responsive to and build upon each child’s individual pattern of development and learning
- Integrate child assessment data in individual and group planning
- Include developmentally appropriate learning experiences in language, literacy, social and emotional development, math, science, social studies, creative arts, and physical development that are focused toward achieving progress outlines in the Head Start Learning Outcomes Framework
- Implement meal time in a way that support development and learning. Meal time must be structured and used as learning opportunities that support teaching staff-child interactions and foster communication and conversations that contribute to a child’s learning, development, and socialization.
- Encourage family style meals
- Approach routines for personal hygiene, transition between activities, as opportunities for strengthening development, learning and skill growth.
- Implement well-organized learning environments with developmentally appropriate schedules, lesson plans, and indoor and outdoor learning experiences that provide adequate opportunities for choice, play, exploration, and experimentation among a variety of learning, sensory, and motor experiences.
- Include teacher-directed and child-initiated activities, active and quiet learning activities, and opportunities for individual, small group and large group learning activities.
- Help obtain a developmental screening to identify concerns regarding a child’s developmental, behavioral, motor, language, social, cognitive, and emotional skills.
- Conduct standardized and structured assessments for each child that provide ongoing information to evaluate the child’s developmental level and progress in outcomes aligned to the goals described in the Head Start Early Learning Child Outcomes Framework
- Use assessment information for individualization, to determine strengths and needs, and to adjust strategies to better support individualized learning and to improve teaching practices
- Inform parents about the purposes of and the results from screenings and assessments and discuss their child’s progress
- Communicate regularly with parents to ensure they are well-informed about their child’s routines, activities, and behavior
- Hold parent conferences to enhance the knowledge and understanding of both staff and parents of the child’s education and developmental progress and activities in the program.
- Give parents opportunity to learn about and provide feedback on selected curricula and instructional materials used in the program
- Conduct home visits for each family to engage the parents in the child’s learning and development
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
- Must be 21 years of age or older and must have a High School Diploma or GED;
- Child Development Associate Credential
- Must have a valid Washington State Driver’s License and must be eligible for the Tribe’s vehicle insurance.
- Ability to obtain the following certificates and licenses within the specified time frame:
- Blood Borne Pathogens (1 Month),
- Food Handlers Certification (2 months),
- First Aid and CPR Certification Infant and Child (2 months).
- Commercial Driver’s License with passenger and school bus endorsements (1 year)
- Ability and willingness to maintain absolute confidentiality of sensitive information for both external and internal systems;
- Previous experience working with Native American clientele and understanding of their cultural needs;
- Successful clearance of Criminal History and Background inquiry—Tribal, State and Federal.
- Successful clearance of National Child Abuse Registry and Neglect Data System;
- Ability to lift and maneuver small children on an ongoing basis and the necessary physical dexterity to work with small children 30-50 lbs. on average (bending, stooping, kneeling, crawling, lifting, etc.).
- AA Degree in ECE required or willingness to obtain within five years of hire date. Must make progress towards meeting this requirement as soon as hired. A signed educational agreement will be required.
- AA degree in a related field and coursework equivalent to a major relating to early childhood education with experience teaching preschool-age children also considered.
- Two years (2) experience working with children 3 years-5 years in a group setting is preferred (or a combination of work and education pertaining to Early Childhood Education);
- Complete a minimum of 15 hours of professional development per year
- Negative TB test prior to employment preferred, required within one month of hire date;
