INTRODUCTION:

The Network Engineer provides technical expertise ensuring the reliable operation of the data networks operated by the Spokane Tribe Telecommunications Exchange Company. The ideal candidate will possess a wide range of skill sets typically found in a small startup environment such as an understanding of the company mission statement, a working knowledge of the business case aspects of current projects and a focus on customer satisfaction.  

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Configure, install and support a wide variety of the Company network equipment such as routers, switches, firewalls and other network equipment.
  • Create and maintain documentation for all networks, repairs and equipment replacement.
  • Perform the design and configuration of dynamic L3 routing protocols such as but not limited to OSPF and BGP.
  • Perform L2 switched network design, configuration and troubleshooting.
  • Perform updates, patching, and full system upgrades for all L2 and L3 network equipment.
  • Monitor BGP connections with internet peers and review core network stability and usage.
  • Monitor LAN/WAN traffic for early detection and isolation of network issues.
  • Troubleshoot, repair and/or replace faulty LAN/WAN systems, equipment, or components.
  • Perform comprehensive security checks, monitoring and alerting of network systems across the entire network infrastructure to ensure network integrity.
  • Conduct periodic security audits, including simulated sniffing, eavesdropping, penetration testing, and devices settings management.
  • Configure, install and support CPE such as routers, switches, firewalls and customer network infrastructure in support of VoIP and Data Network Services.
  • Coordinate planned network outages with all customers to minimize network traffic disruption.
  • Manage Project effectiveness and efficiency by studying, defining, delivering and supporting strategic plans and Company goals for implementing telecommunications projects.
  • Provide first layer response for after hour technical support for network and connectivity issues.
  • Triage, assess and mobilize equipment, parts, staff and materials to restore network connectivity in emergency conditions to minimize system downtimes.
  • Participate in the daily operation of the Company network and telephony infrastructure.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS REQUIRED FOR POSITION:

  • Knowledge of business fundamentals for strategic planning, short/long term goals, purchasing, sales and marketing, budgeting and cost of ownership.
  • Must have project management experience and ability to manage multiple telecom projects.
  • Strong background, experience and working knowledge with the routing and switching protocols and technologies: BGP, EIGRP, OSPF, RSTP, HSRP, VRRP, GLBP, MPLS, SIP, T1/DS1, 802.11, VLANs, IPv4 & IPv6, TCP, TACACS, IPSEC & VPNs, Netflow, DNS, and HTTP.
  • Strong foundation in principles, planning, and implementation of TCP/IP networks.
  • In-depth knowledge of network monitoring software.
  • Ability to engineer network equipment from Brocade, Fortinet, Ruckus and other vendors.
  • Ability to work on PRI circuits and connections up to 10 GigE.
  • Solid understanding of WLAN switching and routing techniques for Ethernet networks.
  • Experience in WLAN packet analysis, signal optimization and PoE.
  • Experience designing network and datacenter installations utilizing L2 and L3 protocols.
  • Competence with testing tools and procedures for data and voice circuits.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision, prioritizing and completing assignments and tasks.
  • Ability to work well under pressure and within time restraints.
  • Must have tolerance and patience for dealing with upset, angry, and/or frustrated individuals.
  • Must be available to work flexible shifts (all days of the week), holidays and special events.
  • Must be able to respond to work during emergency situations.
  • Must be available for periodic overtime or on-call status as required.
  • Must be available for periodic support to remote Mountain top radio sites.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must possess a valid Washington State Drivers License, and be tribally insurable.
  • Must possess and maintain personal automobile insurance (documentation must be attached)
  • Must be able to successfully pass a pre-employment drug screening.
  • Must have a successful employment history with current and past employers.
  • At time of employment must successfully pass a criminal background inquiry. 
  • Two or more years of courses/certifications in telecommunications, computer-related or network-related fields of study. 

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE DESIRED:

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred, College Courses and/or years of industry experience will be considered in lieu of Bachelor’s degree. 
  • Two or more years of courses/certifications in telecommunications, computer-related or network-related fields of study. 
  • A minimum of ten years of experience preferred, in design, installation, maintenance, troubleshooting and repair of networks transporting differing topologies including fiber, wireless and copper.
  • A minimum of ten years of experience preferred, in managing network switches, routers and firewalls.
  • A minimum of ten years of experience preferred, providing after-hours technical support for network or connectivity failures.

SPECIAL CERTIFICATIONS DESIRED:

  • Additional Vendor Specific Training and Certification preferred
  • Project Management Experience preferred.
